Description

NASA JUST CONFIRMED SOMETHING HIT THE MOON — and the impact went unnoticed when it happened. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has identified a newly formed lunar crater created by an impact that occurred in 2024. The crater, named McGetchin, is roughly 222 meters wide and 43 meters deep, making it an unusually large and recent lunar impact. Scientists determined that an asteroid or comet fragment roughly 10–20 meters across struck the Moon sometime between April and May 2024. The discovery is remarkable because nobody observed the impact at the time. Scientists only recognized the fresh crater later by comparing lunar images collected before and after the event. In this video, we examine how NASA discovered the crater, what likely caused the impact, and why this unexpected lunar event matters for understanding how frequently objects collide with the Moon. What we cover in this video: • NASA's discovery of the new McGetchin crater • When the lunar impact likely happened • What scientists believe hit the Moon • Why the impact went unnoticed • How NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter detected it • Why fresh lunar craters are scientifically valuable • What this reveals about impacts across the solar system This video is for educational and informational purposes.
