Description
In 1971, Soviet geologists drilling in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan accidentally collapsed a massive subterranean cavern packed with high-pressure natural gas. To prevent toxic methane from spreading across the region, engineers made a fateful decision: toss in a flare and let the gas burn out in two weeks.
Over half a century later, the 70-meter-wide inferno known as the "Door to Hell" is still raging at over 400°C.
How did a routine geological survey turn into one of history’s longest-running engineering miscalculations? Why can’t emergency teams simply extinguish the fire with water, foam, or concrete caps? And why might putting out the flames actually trigger an even deadlier ecological disaster?
From the extreme geology of the massive Amu Darya hydrocarbon basin and Cold War nuclear firefighting experiments to the shocking discovery of extremophile life thriving inside the flames, discover the full science and history behind the planet’s most unstoppable geological furnace.
