Description
Imagine a shark swimming through the ocean that may have been alive since the early 1600s! 🦈🌊
In 2016, scientists made an extraordinary discovery while studying Greenland sharks, mysterious deep-water predators found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.
By using radiocarbon dating on proteins found in their eye lenses, researchers estimated that one massive female Greenland shark was approximately 392 years old, although the estimate carried considerable uncertainty.
This incredible discovery helped establish Greenland sharks as the longest-living vertebrates known to science.
These mysterious creatures grow extremely slowly, can live for centuries, and may not reach sexual maturity until around 150 years of age.
The ocean is hiding living pieces of history, and Greenland sharks are among its most extraordinary survivors
