While Aetheryn wandered among the gravestones, struggling with the choice before him and contemplating everything that loving Celia might ask of them both, Celia was facing a very different struggle in the human world. At home, the people who loved her believed they understood what her future should be. There was a kind and handsome young man who cared for her sincerely, her family could imagine a safe and respectable life beside him, and to everyone around her, the path ahead seemed so simple that they could not understand why Celia could not simply be happy with it. The difficulty was that there was nothing wrong with the life they wanted for her. The young man was good to her, her parents wanted her happiness, and the future they imagined was neither cruel nor unreasonable. Yet every attempt to persuade Celia toward that life only made her more painfully aware that her heart had already chosen another. She loved Aetheryn, and no amount of kindness, security or approval could transform affection for someone else into the love she felt for him. Unable to contain everything she had been carrying, Celia began writing Aetheryn a letter. She poured into it the feelings she had struggled to speak aloud, confessing what he meant to her and giving words to the choice she had already made within herself. Eventually, she could bear the distance no longer. Taking the letter with her, she left the human world behind and crossed into the forest, determined to find Aetheryn and finally place the truth of her heart before him. She found him that night in the forest library, but the reunion she had imagined was not the one that awaited her. Aetheryn had spent his own hours confronting fear, mortality and the consequences of choosing a human woman whose life would unfold so differently from his own, yet Celia knew nothing of the thoughts that had brought him to that moment. All she could see was the hesitation in the man for whom she had been willing to abandon the future everyone else had chosen for her. For Celia, that hesitation was devastating. She had come to him after resisting the expectations of her family, turning away from a good man and risking the only life she had ever known because she loved Aetheryn enough to choose an uncertain future beside him. To discover that he might not be equally certain of her made her feel not merely rejected, but deeply betrayed. She did not remain long enough to understand what lay behind his silence. Hurt and overwhelmed, she turned away from him and left the library almost as quickly as she had entered it, throwing the letter she had written for him onto the floor as she went. The words she had crossed the forest to give him remained behind.
