Description

More than 4,300 years ago, an Egyptian official named Metri was immortalized in one of Ancient Egypt’s most remarkable statues. 🤯🇪🇬 Dating to the 5th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, this wooden statue was discovered at Saqqara, the vast necropolis of ancient Memphis. Metri is portrayed sitting cross-legged with a papyrus sheet across his lap, in the traditional pose of an Egyptian scribe. But his titles reveal that he held important administrative and religious positions, including Overseer of Scribes and Priest of Maat. One of the statue’s most extraordinary features is its lifelike eyes. The whites were made from opaque quartz, while the pupils were crafted from rock crystal, giving the face a remarkably realistic appearance. Traces of the original paint also survive on the statue. For the ancient Egyptians, tomb statues helped preserve a person's identity and represent them for eternity. Metri was depicted in several statues in his tomb, offering a glimpse into how an elite official wanted to be remembered more than four millennia ago. Thousands of years later, Metri’s face still captures our attention. 🏛️ Follow for more incredible discoveries, ancient monuments, and untold stories from Ancient Egypt! 🇪🇬#AncientEgypt #EgyptianHistory #Metri #Saqqara #EgyptianArtifacts #AncientHistory #GrandEgyptianMuseum #Archaeology #Egypt #HistoryShorts #Shorts
