Description
Before the Blues Had a Name — Raw Delta Blues rooted in the African musical traditions, rhythms, voices and call-and-response that helped shape the roots of blues music.
Discover the roots of the blues through raw Delta blues, African rhythms, harmonica, resonator guitar, call-and-response, and the musical traditions carried across generations.
Long before the blues had a name, there was rhythm.
This episode of Blues Roots travels back before the Mississippi Delta, exploring the musical journey from West Africa to the Atlantic and into the American South. Through eight original roots blues songs, we follow the transformation of rhythm, voice, hand claps, foot stomps and early string traditions.
This is not a modern recreation of African music. It is a musical tribute to the traditions, memories and voices that survived displacement and found new forms in America.
From communal singing and call-and-response to body percussion, resonator guitar and early banjo traditions, each song represents another step in a long musical transformation.
The blues did not appear overnight, and it was not created by a single person in a single place. Its story reaches back through generations of musical memory, adaptation and survival.
