Description
Puppylove (2013) is a quiet French-language coming-of-age drama from director Delphine Lehericey, starring Solène Rigot, Audrey Bastien, and Vincent Pérez. More than a decade later, critics and viewers still disagree about it. According to available sources, it was never banned and never went to trial, so why does this film still divide audiences? This cinema history documentary investigates.
Premiering at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September 2013, Puppylove was the first fiction feature from a director who came to cinema through theatre and television documentary. A four-country European co-production spanning Belgium, Switzerland, France, and Luxembourg, it follows a lonely fourteen-year-old and the charismatic new neighbour who draws her toward a world she isn't ready for. This documentary traces the director and co-writer behind the film, its financing and box office record, and the critical reaction that split reviewers. It also asks where its controversy really lived. There are no spoilers here, and no scandal invented, only what the historical record supports.
If you enjoy controversial movie history, cult cinema history, film censorship debates, European cinema, lost films, or forgotten stories from film history, this documentary about movies looks at how critics, audiences, and time shape a film's cinematic legacy. It also explores movie production history: how small art house films are financed, released, and remembered.
When a film treats a young person's inner life as serious drama, is that an act of honesty, or a risk no filmmaker can fully control? Where do you think the line falls between art and exploitation? Share your thoughts in the comments.
