Two honest things up front: "accepted" is really the wrong word for the Vikings — so this video spends its time unpacking why, and telling you the stranger, harsher truth instead. And I chose to be upfront that the ground here is thin: almost everything we have was written down by Christians centuries after the pagan Viking Age ended.
The Vikings didn't ask whether a man loved men or women. They asked one question that mattered more than almost anything: were you on top, or beneath? The same act could be a boast for one man and a life-destroying disgrace for the other. This isn't the acceptance story people expect — it's a brutal code of dominance, shame, and honour.
A horse's head on a cursed pole. An insult that could get you legally killed. A god who gave birth to a foal. And a truth stranger than "they didn't care."

From the scorn-pole to the sagas, this is the honest story of how the Norse world really handled sex between men — sorted ruthlessly by power, not by who you loved.
🎬 5 things I learned making this:
1. "Accepted" is misleading. The Vikings didn't celebrate love between men like Greece did — they ranked it by dominance, and the honest story is far darker.
2. The active/"top" role was shrugged at. The passive/receptive role was among the worst shames a man could bear — an insult (níð) you could be legally killed or outlawed over.
3. The logic: a man who submitted in bed was assumed to submit everywhere — so he couldn't be trusted to fight or lead. The shame was about submission, not desire.
4. The myths complicate it: Loki turned into a mare and gave birth; Odin practised "womanly" magic. Both were mocked for it — yet neither lost his place among the gods.
5. The honest catch: nearly all our sources are Christian Icelandic writings from centuries later. We can trace the insult culture — but not some hidden world of accepted, loving relationships.
