In a wooden hall in Tokyo, a small, white-haired teacher from Okinawa watches his students move as one. His name is Gichin Funakoshi, and the style he teaches will carry his pen name, Shoto, "waves of pine", the sound of the wind in the pine trees. Kan means hall, so Shotokan first names a place, the hall of Shoto.
From that single dojo grows one of the most widely practised styles of Karate in the world. In this documentary we follow Shotokan from Funakoshi's youth in Shuri to the university clubs of Tokyo, from the first black belts and the change from "China hand" to "empty hand" to the Japan Karate Association and the instructors who carried the art abroad.
Chapters:
1. Hook & Intro: A teacher from Okinawa in a Tokyo hall
2. Origin & Birthplace: Shuri, Azato and Itosu
3. History & Development: Tokyo, the university clubs, the name Shotokan
4. Legendary Masters: Gigo Funakoshi, Masatoshi Nakayama and the JKA instructors
5. Core Techniques: Kihon, kata and kumite
6. Weapons & Tools: Makiwara, gi, obi and the dojo
7. Cultural Significance: Niju Kun, Dojo Kun, Zen and the Olympic Games
8. Conclusion & Outro: The wind in the pines lives on
Much of Shotokan's early history rests on association accounts and oral tradition, and sources sometimes disagree on dates and details. We mark such points as "said to be" or "by some accounts". The karate events at the Olympic Games were run by the World Karate Federation (WKF), not by the JKA.
