At dawn above Shuri, the old royal capital of Okinawa, a row of students in white uniforms bows to their teacher and waits in silence. What they practise is Shorin-ryu, a family of Karate styles whose name means "small forest style" and is one of the roots of the Karate the world knows today.
Its story is not the story of one founder. It belongs to royal guards, teachers from a harbour village, schoolchildren and their masters, on islands once at the crossroads of China and Japan.
In this documentary we follow Shorin-ryu from the court of the Ryukyu Kingdom to the classrooms of Shuri, from Itosu, Chibana and Nagamine to the festival streets of modern Naha, and we separate what is documented from what is only legend.
Chapters:
1. Hook & Intro: A row of students at dawn in Shuri
2. Origin & Birthplace: The Ryukyu Kingdom, Shuri-te and Tomari-te
3. History & Development: Itosu, the schools and the spread of Karate
4. Legendary Masters: Matsumura, Itosu, Chibana, Kyan and Nagamine
5. Core Techniques: Kihon, kata, kumite and bunkai
6. Weapons & Tools: Okinawan Kobudo
7. Cultural Significance: Karate Day and the rebuilding of Shuri Castle
8. Conclusion & Outro: A family of styles, passed from teacher to student
Much of the early history of Okinawan Karate rests on oral tradition, and sources often disagree. We mark stories as legend where historians question them.
