Description

The Most Powerful Gods in Egyptian Mythology Explained Anubis is one of the oldest gods in the entire Egyptian pantheon, with worship documented as far back as the First Dynasty, and for a long time he was the undisputed ruler of the dead before Osiris eventually took that throne from him. Even after losing the top position, Anubis remained absolutely indispensable to every soul that ever died in ancient Egypt. He was the jackal-headed god responsible for guiding the dead through the underworld, and his most important role was presiding over the Weighing of the Heart ceremony in the Hall of Two Truths. In that ceremony, the heart of the deceased was placed on one side of a golden scale and the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and cosmic order, was placed on the other.
