Description

August 29, 2005. The levees break, and Wayne lands in a New Orleans neighborhood as the water rises. In Episode 11 of Black to the Future, Wayne lives Hurricane Katrina through Black eyes. He's on the rooftops waiting for boats that never come, at the Convention Center with thousands who waited for days, in the newspapers that called Black survivors "looting" and white survivors "finding," and on the Crescent City Connection bridge, where Gretna police turned families back at gunpoint. This isn't the Katrina story most people were told. It's the one many families lived. 📚 THE REAL HISTORY • Levee failures flooded about 80% of New Orleans • More than 100,000 residents had no car, and the evacuation plan assumed people would drive • Thousands waited days at the Convention Center for help • On Sept. 1, 2005, Gretna police blocked evacuees from crossing the bridge on foot • The Road Home program shortchanged Black neighborhoods, and about 100,000 Black residents never returned 💛 If this episode moved you, taught you something, or made you think of someone who lived through Katrina, please consider leaving a Super Thanks (the 💲 heart button under the video).
