Description

There is a sheet of paper pinned to the wall of the kitchen on this colony. Every woman here is on it, in an order that does not change. It has decided what I did with every week of my life since I was seventeen. And then one week, a woman's name is not on it, and nobody tells her. In this one I explain what the rotation actually is — the four kinds of week, what each of them physically involves, and why a system that sounds like a cage from the outside felt like a floor from the inside for twenty-eight years. Then I explain what happens when it lets you go, what the men are doing at exactly the same age, and what the women who come off the list actually spend the rest of their lives doing — which is not what anybody pictures. I am forty-six. It has started to happen to me, and I did not take it, and I explain why in the last third of this video. It is not the flattering answer. I have made a correction in this one. At the end of my last video I told you the rotation "stops" at forty-five. It does not stop. It thins. I explain the difference at about six minutes in, and why the softer version is actually the harder one. My husband keeps the books on this colony and has his own channel. He has covered the men's side of the same arrangement there. SOURCES Mary-Ann Kirkby, Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen — the kitchen rotation and the ages 17 to 45, as reported in the Manitoba Co-operator. Hutterites.org — the Klanaschuel, and the three or four Klanaschuel-ankelen who take turns running it. John A. Hostetler, Hutterite Society — the age progression through work, management and authority, and the principle that the younger defers to the older. NOTE ON HONESTY Two things in this video are my own observation and not in any source, and I say so on camera when I get to them. The first is the roughly one quiet year I describe. No study I could find documents it. It is what I have watched happen on one colony, to women I know, and it may not be true anywhere else. The second is my explanation of why the number is forty-five. No source gives a reason for that age. The reason I give is mine. What IS documented is that the retirement is gradual rather than fixed, that no ceremony or formal recognition is recorded anywhere, and that nobody has written down what the year afterwards is like. If you find a source that has, put it in the comments and I will read it. This channel is narrated by a composite character. The voice and image are AI-generated. Everything factual about Hutterite life in it is sourced above or flagged as unverified.
