Description

In 1954, the Soviet Union carried out one of the most disturbing military experiments of the Cold War. Under the code name Operation Snowball, more than 45,000 Soviet soldiers assembled at the Totskoye proving ground to answer a question no nation had ever dared to test in combat conditions: could an army fight through the aftermath of a live nuclear explosion? Moments after an RDS-4 atomic bomb detonated overhead, thousands of troops, tanks, artillery pieces, and aircraft advanced directly across the radioactive battlefield while commanders measured whether a nuclear strike could become a practical battlefield tactic against NATO. For decades, the operation remained hidden behind Soviet secrecy, with participants bound by strict confidentiality agreements and many records disappearing from public view. As classified footage finally emerged after the collapse of the USSR, it revealed a chilling exercise involving live nuclear weapons, radioactive battlefields, exposed civilians, and soldiers sent toward ground zero with little understanding of the risks. This is the story of the Totskoye Nuclear Exercise, the Soviet Union's only known military drill involving a live atomic bomb, and one of the most controversial nuclear experiments ever conducted. - As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Docs sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect.
