Description
Are you one of those people who still pictures a solar system as that poster from third grade? A yellow blob, eight marbles in a tidy row, Pluto sulking in the corner? Throw it away — because out in the galaxy there are hundreds of billions of other solar systems, and almost none of them look anything like ours.
In this episode we swap the poster for a campfire. A fire is a star, the campers around it are planets, and where you sit changes everything. From there we tour the whole campground: newborn fires still spinning inside a pancake of dust, giant planets roasting themselves three days at a time, planets that pace in and out on stretched-out orbits, systems crammed into a space smaller than Mercury's lap, fires that come in twos and threes, and what's left over once a fire finally burns out. Along the way you'll find out the single most common type of planet in the galaxy — and why our own neighborhood doesn't have one. Tech and space explained like you're five, cartoon style.
