Description
In Scotland, boats literally ride a Ferris wheel into the sky. The Falkirk Wheel is a 2,000-ton rotating elevator for boats, and it runs on roughly the power of eight kettles.
One canal sits 115 feet above the other. The old eleven-lock staircase took nearly a whole day and lost almost a million gallons of water every trip. The fix was Archimedes: a floating boat pushes out exactly its own weight in water, so both water-filled gondolas always weigh the same and the wheel stays balanced.
