Description
If your bathroom still smells like urine after cleaning, the smell is probably not in the bowl. Splash dries on the floor at the base, under the bolt caps, in the grout line and on the wall behind the toilet, the places that usually get a wipe instead of a wash. My mother washed her comfort room floor in Batangas every single morning, and it never smelled of anything but soap.
WHY IT COMES BACK
- Lion, a soap company in Japan, surveyed 1,200 people. About 8 in 10 said the smell returns a while after they clean.
- A researcher at Brigham Young University's Splash Lab says a standing stream travels five times farther than a seated one, and some droplets will always clear the rim.
- Clorox's urine remover sheet explains that dried urine leaves crystals in porous grout, and damp air or a wet surface can bring the ammonia smell back.
- Contracting Profits, a trade magazine, put the urine-in-grout question to restroom cleaner makers. One answer: a damp mopping won't do.
THE FOUR PLACES
1. The floor around the base, all the way to the back.
2. The two bolt caps at the bottom.
3. The grout line closest to the toilet, the worst of the four.
4. The wall behind the toilet, up to about knee height.
THE WASH
Hot water and dish soap in a bucket, or an enzyme cleaner for a smell that has been there for years. Scrub, let it sit wet, rinse a small section at a time with a dipper, soak the water straight up with a towel, then dry everything. Never mix bleach with ammonia or an acid like vinegar, and keep bleach and vinegar away from enzyme cleaners.
Tell me in the comments which of the four places got your nose first. Next up: vinegar, and the four places in your house it damages.
