Description
A slow draining kitchen sink rarely gets that way overnight. Often it starts at the stove, with a pan of leftover oil and the hot tap we all trust to wash it away. My mother fried every single morning in Lipa, Batangas, and her sink only ever saw water. If you have ever stood over a warm pan wondering what to do with oil after frying, this one is for you.
WHY THE HOT TAP DOES NOT SAVE YOU
- The sewer people in Fairfax County, Virginia, list hot water and detergents as a myth. Neither one dissolves grease; they only move it deeper, where it can stick and build up.
- Austin Water says many cooking oils set as they cool, and the runny ones often bind to grease already in the pipe, so the deposit grows with every pour.
- In Fairfax, the pipe from the house to the county sewer is the homeowner's job. Angi's August price guide says clearing a kitchen sink runs 110 to 215 dollars, and a main sewer line up to 800.
THE FIVE THINGS
1. The oil from the pan. Let it cool, strain it back into a bottle or jar, and fry with it again. King Arthur Baking says it can be reused two to eight times, and the number depends on the oil and the food. Two signs it is finished: it looks dark or murky, or it starts smoking short of frying heat.
2. Coffee grounds and eggshells. InSinkErator says both pass through a disposal but settle like sand, and AAA says the eggshell skin can form sticky clumps that catch grease. Ours went to the garden.
3. Coconut oil, and anything cooked in gata (coconut milk). The federal chemical data sheet puts its freezing point near 76 degrees Fahrenheit, and the Department of Energy suggests 68 for winter days at home, so it can set on the counter before it ever reaches a cold pipe.
4. Rice. AAA says it swells and clumps into a paste in the drain. Ours came back the next morning as sinangag, garlic fried rice.
5. The adobo pan. Austin Water and Fairfax both count sauces as grease. Wipe the pan out with a paper towel first, and wash it after.
WHEN THE OIL IS FINALLY DONE
Austin Water's three steps: let it cool, seal it in something like an empty coffee can, and put it in the trash. My mother used an old milk can on the windowsill.
Tell me in the comments what keeps your old oil beside the stove. Coming up next: the bathroom.
