Description
My Three Sons put a widowed aeronautical engineer, three boys and a 73-year-old grandfather in an apron on ABC in 1960. What did it really cost Steve Douglas to raise his sons, and why did the most valuable man in the house, Bub, never get paid?
In 1960, only about 300,000 American families had a father raising the kids with no wife in the house. We put real prices behind the Douglas household, from Steve's defense-industry paycheck to the job Bub did for free.
Spotlight Moments
- Steve Douglas's paycheck comes from Washington: in 1960, defense was about 52% of the federal budget.
- A typical engineer earned $10,660 that year, nearly twice the $5,600 median family income.
- A 1954 tax rule written for widowers covered just $600 of child care, and only if Steve paid someone to do it.
- Household workers in 1965 averaged $800 a year, and the minimum wage didn't cover them until 1974.
- William Frawley at 73: the studio was told insuring him would cost too much, so Bub was written out.
- Fred MacMurray shot a whole season in 65 days, and the production reorganized itself around his schedule.
Why this matters
Classic TV families look effortless. Put real prices behind them and a different story comes out. The Douglas house never ran short of money. What it couldn't afford was losing the man doing the chores. From the "Will the last person leaving Seattle turn out the lights?" billboard to the black-and-white episodes left on a shelf, this is the economics of My Three Sons that nobody talks about.
