Description
Remember *The Real McCoys*? In 1957, Grandpa Amos McCoy and his family moved from West Virginia to a small California farm. But what if the land beneath their feet was worth more than anything they could ever grow on it?
Starring Walter Brennan, Richard Crenna, and Kathleen Nolan, The Real McCoys became one of America's most beloved black-and-white television comedies. Behind the laughter, however, was a fascinating story about money, farming, and the changing American Dream.
When the McCoys arrived in California's San Fernando Valley, farmland was rapidly disappearing. Orange groves and family farms were being replaced by suburban neighborhoods, shopping centers, and new homes.
And Grandpa Amos was sitting right in the middle of it all.
In this episode, we explore:
- What a typical American family earned in 1957
- Why millions of Americans were leaving family farms
- How California farmland became valuable real estate
- The financial struggles of small farmers in the 1950s
- How Walter Brennan became more than just the star of The Real McCoys
- What happened to Luke, Kate, Pepino, and the rest of the beloved cast
- Why The Real McCoys helped pave the way for The Beverly Hillbillies and other classic rural sitcoms
From Grandpa Amos's stubborn ways to Luke and Kate's struggles to make a living, The Real McCoys captured an America that was changing faster than anyone realized.
The McCoys came to California hoping to make a living from the land. But could the farm itself have been their greatest financial opportunity?
