How Rich Were the Cartwrights?

For millions of Americans, Bonanza was part of Sunday night. Ben Cartwright. Adam. Hoss. Little Joe. The Ponderosa. For three straight years, Bonanza was the #1 television show in America. But behind the scenes, the Cartwright family was slowly falling apart. First, Pernell Roberts walked away from the series at the height of its success. Then came the loss that changed everything. In May 1972, Dan Blocker — the beloved Hoss Cartwright — died suddenly at just 43 years old after complications from gallbladder surgery. His death devastated the cast, especially Michael Landon, and left Bonanza without one of its most loved characters. The show tried to move forward, but the magic was never quite the same. New characters were introduced, Bonanza was moved from Sunday night to Tuesday, ratings collapsed, and NBC canceled the series during its 14th season. The final episode aired in January 1973 — without the grand farewell fans had watched for more than a decade to receive.
