Description
📖 My book, The Appalachian Book of the Living and the Lost: https://www.otisboone.com
Ten rules the old mountain folks and hard experience both agree on, starting with the one most campers break on the very first cold night: zipping the sleeping bag shut over their face. This video walks through why a popping fire can warn you of coming snow, why the creek bottom is the coldest place you could pitch a tent, and why sassafras and charcoal grills have no business near your sleeping bag. It ties those practical rules to the real 1993 Storm of the Century that stranded a hundred Michigan students on the Appalachian Trail, and to the carbon monoxide deaths that followed campers trying to stay warm the wrong way. The last two rules are different, the kind the old folks kept not for the cold but for Christmas Eve, when they said the animals talk and the pines sing to anyone willing to sit under them and listen. By the end you will know how a hiker survived that storm, what killed the ones who did not survive other winters, and why some rules up here were never about the weather at all.
