Description

My book, The Appalachian Book of the Living and the Lost: https://www.otisboone.com In 1913 the government sent a geologist to Burke County to put the Brown Mountain Lights to rest, and for three years his answer held, until a flood shut down the rail line and the lights kept rising anyway. This video walks through every official investigation of the lights, from the 1922 Mansfield survey and the 1977 Orion experiment to the night in 2016 when two time-lapse cameras finally caught the same unexplained light at once, and sorts out which legends came from the people who actually lived under that mountain and which were added later by a newspaper, a sign, or a TV show. You'll hear what the science got right, where it fell short, and exactly where to stand on Brown Mountain and what to look for if you want to see one of these lights for yourself. Told by a local who was raised in these Appalachian hollers, with the old stories kept the way they were handed down.
