Indian Peafowl Life Cycle: A Mother Defends Her Chicks Against a Cobra

Indian Peafowl Life Cycle: Peahen Faces a Hungry Mongoose to Save Her Eggs A nest has just been found. A mongoose rushes in, jaws open. The peahen stands over her eggs — no train, no male to help — only instinct and a few seconds to decide the fate of the clutch. That is how the life of the Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) often begins: on the ground, already under attack. The nest is little more than a shallow scrape hidden in scrub. The female lays 3–8 eggs and incubates them alone for about 28–30 days. In that window, mongooses, monitor lizards, jackals, jungle cats, feral dogs, and snakes — including cobras, pythons, and vipers — all come looking. She must leave the nest twice a day to eat and drink. Every absence is a chance for the clutch to disappear. The chicks hatch ready to walk and feed, but they are still easy prey. In the wild, only about two out of every six peachicks usually survive to adulthood. They stay close to their mother for months: first in dense cover, then in more open ground as they grow stronger. Raptors, snakes, and small carnivores keep hunting them. Danger changes shape as they mature. Adult birds can fly into trees and sound loud alarm calls, but leopards, tigers, dholes, jackals, and large pythons still take them. The famous train that wins mates also makes a peacock harder to hide. Ironically, peafowl themselves kill and eat small snakes — including young cobras — so they are both prey and predator. This video follows that full arc: the raid on the nest, the long and risky incubation, the fragile first weeks of the chicks, and the birds that live long enough to grow, display, and start the cycle again.
