Not her family, not the court, not her friends, and certainly not Alwen. Only the diary hidden inside her bedchamber knows how deeply she has fallen in love with her knight. She tried to reason herself out of it, because Alwen is not only a woman but her sworn protector, bound to the Crown and to a life of duty. Their world has already decided what a princess's future should look like, and this is certainly not it. Yet feelings are not always obedient to the lives prepared for us. What makes forgetting Alwen impossible is the way she makes the Princess feel. Alwen sees the woman beneath the title. She notices when the Princess is frightened, tired or cold before she says a word. She remembers the smallest things, guards her chamber through the night, and protects her with a devotion that often feels like something more. Alwen never speaks of love, but sometimes her eyes seem to. Then she lowers them, remembers her duty, and becomes the knight again. Sometimes an honest answer, even a painful one, can release us from waiting and finally allow us to begin again. That is what finally gives the Princess courage. Confessing love does not mean asking someone to choose us. It simply means being honest about how we feel and giving them the freedom to answer honestly too.
