15 Items the Pentagon Tells Soldiers to Have at Home — They Won't Tell Civilians
Most civilians think military preparedness means tactical gear, expensive survival equipment, and specialized training. In reality, official military preparedness guidance puts much more emphasis on ordinary supplies that keep a household functioning when electricity, water, communications, or transportation are disrupted.
In this video, we’re looking at 15 items commonly emphasized in U.S. military family preparedness guidance and explaining why some of them deserve more attention in civilian emergency kits.
The Army’s Ready Army program recommends maintaining emergency supplies at home and considering additional kits for your vehicle and workplace. Its home-kit guidance includes water, nonperishable food, prescription medication, N95 respirators, sanitation supplies, flashlights, a NOAA weather radio, extra batteries, cash in small bills, tools for shutting off utilities, local maps, emergency plans, and protected copies of important documents.
Some military guidance goes beyond what people normally imagine putting in an emergency kit. Marine Corps preparedness guidance, for example, includes sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sleeping gear, disinfectant, waterproof matches, a fire extinguisher, cash, and supplies for potentially sheltering at home for up to two weeks.
We’ll break down which items are genuinely useful, why they’re recommended, and which ones could make the biggest difference during an extended outage, evacuation, severe storm, or other disruption.
One correction to the title: the Pentagon is not secretly withholding a special 15-item preparedness list from civilians. Military preparedness programs publish much of their guidance publicly, and Ready Army explicitly says its program serves Soldiers, families, and civilians while aligning with FEMA and other national agencies.
The interesting part isn’t a secret list. It’s how seriously military communities are encouraged to prepare before an emergency happens.
What’s one item you think most civilian emergency kits are missing? Let us know in the comments.
