Support me on Patreon or by signing up for Youtube Memberships. https://www.patreon.com/cw/thepast33yrs In this video, we will be exploring two different frameworks that seek to categorize systems based upon their complexity: The “Main Levels in the Hierarchy of Systems” as described by Boulding and Bertalanffy, and the “Evolutionary Quanta” of Metasystem Transitions as described by Valentin Turchin. And, we will propose, that these two categorization frameworks are converging or have since converged: the Level 5 System—one that is purely symbolic and purely mathematical converging with the Seventh Quantum, the Control of Culture via the merger of our biological metasystems with purely symbolic, technological, informational, and algorithmic metasystems—metasystems etched into and composed of silicon. For the Boulding and Bertalanffy framework—the Main Levels in the Hierarchy of Systems with respect to complexity—there are actually nine levels, but we will disregard the most basic and purely mechanical systems which are, as follows: static systems—which are the fundamental building blocks of matter like atoms and molecules—and the more mechanical systems, which are clock works and control mechanisms. We are then left with 6 quote-unquote “living” levels, which, starting at Level 0 are: Open Systems (like fire), Level 1 Systems which are composed of Lower Organisms (like single-celled organisms, bacteria, and plants), Level 2 Systems (animals), Level 3 Systems (the symbol-driven “animal” that is man), Level 4 Systems (the symbol-driven communities of human societies), and, finally, Level 5 Systems which are purely symbolic and mathematical. We’ll jump into Valentin Turchin’s framework more later, but I wanted to introduce Boulding and Bertalanffy’s framework first, since it is simpler and we’ll be referencing it as the base framework. And, as a note, I will just refer to this as the Bertalanffy framework as I’ll be referencing Ludwig von Bertalanffy’s 1969 book: “General System Theory;” but, we can keep in mind that this framework was originally sketched out by Kenneth Boulding in 1956.
