Description

Everyone interprets Monsters as a metaphor for immigration. Even its Director, Gareth Edwards, says it. But there's a SERIOUS problem with that reading. In this film, the monsters are real. They kill people. The wall is a sensible reaction to a very real threat. Which makes the standard interpretation awkward at best. Look a little deeper and a different film emerges, a film about Western privilege, about catastrophe tourism. About our ability to adapt to absolutely anything. Pandemics. Wars. Economic collapse. And there's something in the very first frame that almost nobody notices. I didn't either. Made for less than half a million dollars, shot across five countries in three weeks with a crew small enough to fit inside a single van, Monsters remains one of the most remarkable directorial debuts of the 21st century. #monsters #GarethEdwards #SciFi #ScienceFiction #CultFilm #CultCinema #MovieAnalysis #FilmAnalysis #VideoEssay #FilmEssay #Movies #Cinema #MovieReview #FilmReview #IndieFilm #BritishCinema #AlienInvasion #MonsterMovie #MovieDiscussion #FilmTheory #MovieTube #FilmTube #Cinephile #CultMovies #UnderratedMovies #AlexGarland #CivilWar #ApocalypseNow #MovieCritic #MoviedromeRedux
