Description
There's a part in your house that costs about ten dollars, and leaving it broken could be costing you hundreds. A running toilet alone can waste about 200 gallons of water a day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In the 1960s, most families would have fixed it themselves in about fifteen minutes. In this video, we go through 12 smart fix-it habits from the 1960s that still save real money today. Together, they can add up to several hundred dollars a year.
When something broke in the sixties, the first question wasn't "where can I buy a new one?" It was "can I fix this?" Dad had a toolbox in the garage, Mom had a sewing tin in the kitchen drawer, and the hardware store knew exactly which little part you needed. There's money psychology behind it, too. Researchers at Harvard found that people value things more when they put their own work into them. So when you repair instead of replace, you save money and you take better care of what you own.
Here's what you'll learn:
Fix the leaks you can't see. Learn how to fix a running toilet with a ten-dollar rubber flap, and how to stop a dripping faucet. The EPA says one drip a second wastes more than 3,000 gallons a year, and the fix is often a washer that costs less than a dollar. We also cover sealing drafts with a tube of caulk; the government's Energy Star program says sealing air leaks and adding insulation can cut up to 10% off your yearly energy bills. And we cover changing your furnace filter, which the Department of Energy says can lower your air conditioner's energy use by 5-15%.
Make clothes and shoes last. Keep a simple sewing kit, patch and mend small rips before they become big holes, put new soles on good shoes instead of buying new ones, and shorten or take in clothes with a needle and thread.
Take care of the big stuff. Check your tire pressure once a month; the Department of Energy says properly filled tires can improve your gas mileage by up to 3%. Do small car jobs like wiper blades and the air filter yourself. Clean the coils behind your fridge and the lint from your dryer vent. Most important of all, look up the fix before you replace anything. The consumer group U.S. PIRG estimates a typical family could save about $330 a year just by repairing electronics instead of replacing them.
At the end, we reveal the one question behind all 12 habits, and why it decides where your money goes.
This isn't about pretending the 1960s were perfect. Money was tight for a lot of families, and that's exactly why these fix-it habits were born. Keep the habits, not the hardship. Please stay safe, and always call a licensed pro for anything electrical or gas.
