Description
5 Friends You Must Never Keep (They're Dangerous) – Machiavelli
I used to think the people closest to me were automatically the people I could trust. But the more I studied human behavior, power, and Machiavelli’s philosophy, the more I realized something uncomfortable: sometimes the people standing beside you can influence your life more than the enemies standing against you. In this video, I explore 5 types of friends you should never keep too close—the person who secretly resents your success, the friend who turns every conversation into a competition, the one who trades your secrets for attention, the person who constantly drains your energy, and finally, the friend who keeps pulling you back toward the person you used to be. I created this video around a simple question:
What if some friendships are not supporting your future—but quietly protecting your past?
Using themes inspired by Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince, I examine loyalty, trust, envy, manipulation, reputation, influence, and the people we allow into our inner circle.
This is not about becoming cold, cruel, or isolated. I believe real friendship is valuable. The point is to become more aware of who genuinely wants to see me grow—and who only feels comfortable when I remain the same.
Sometimes, I don't lose people because they betrayed me.
Sometimes, I lose them because I finally became someone they could no longer control, recognize, or relate to.
📚 References & Sources
This video is inspired by the political philosophy and observations on human behavior found in Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince.
The ideas and themes presented in this video draw primarily from the following chapters:
1. Niccolò Machiavelli — The Prince, Chapter XV
“Concerning Things for Which Men, and Especially Princes, Are Praised or Blamed”
— Used as a foundation for Machiavelli’s realistic approach to human behavior, relationships, loyalty, and power.
2. Niccolò Machiavelli — The Prince, Chapter XVII
“Concerning Cruelty and Clemency, and Whether It Is Better to Be Loved Than Feared”
— Referenced for Machiavelli’s observations about human loyalty, changing behavior under pressure, and the difference between genuine loyalty and self-interest.
3. Niccolò Machiavelli — The Prince, Chapter XVIII
“Concerning the Way in Which Princes Should Keep Faith”
— Referenced for the themes of trust, deception, appearances, and the strategic nature of human relationships.
4. Niccolò Machiavelli — The Prince, Chapter XIX
“Of Avoiding Contempt and Hatred”
— Referenced for the themes of reputation, respect, social perception, and the consequences of surrounding oneself with the wrong people.
5. Niccolò Machiavelli — The Prince, Chapter XXII
“Of the Secretaries of Princes”
— One of the primary references for this video. Machiavelli discusses the importance of carefully choosing the people who surround a leader and argues that the character and ability of those around him reveal his own judgment.
6. Niccolò Machiavelli — The Prince, Chapter XXIII
“How Flatterers Should Be Avoided”
— Referenced for the dangers of surrounding yourself with people who manipulate, flatter, or influence your judgment for their own interests.
Primary Source:
Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince (originally written in 1513; first published in 1532).
The purpose of this video is educational and interpretive: to explore how Machiavelli’s observations about power, loyalty, trust, reputation, and human behavior can be applied to modern relationships.
