Description

In 1788 the Austrian army marched into Wallachia to fight the Ottomans and lost a battle without ever finding them. A scouting party found alcohol instead of Turks. An argument over the barrels turned into a shot, a shout, and then a full panic — made worse by an army drawn from a dozen nationalities that couldn't understand each other's orders. Artillery fired on its own troops in the dark. The Emperor was thrown from his horse into a ditch. The Ottomans arrived two days later and took Karánsebes without a fight. Note: the 10,000 figure comes from later accounts and is disputed — contemporary records are thin, and some historians think the scale was exaggerated in retelling.
