Mighty Sparrow’s Funeral: Trinidad and Tobago Says Final Goodbye to Calypso King Trinidad and Tobago has said a final goodbye to the legendary Mighty Sparrow, as family, friends, government leaders and fans gathered to celebrate the life of one of the Caribbean’s most influential musical icons. Born Slinger Francisco, Sparrow died in New York on September 27, 2026, at the age of 91, following a brief illness. His funeral and Celebration of Life took place on October 16 at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain. The farewell began with a procession through the capital, as mourners gathered to honour the calypso legend. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar joined the nation in recognising Sparrow’s extraordinary contribution to Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and musical heritage. The ceremony featured tributes celebrating his remarkable career, which spanned more than seven decades. His songs captured Caribbean life, social issues, humour and the experiences of ordinary people, helping take calypso music to audiences around the world. Cultural traditions were also part of the farewell, with steel orchestras, masqueraders and Moko Jumbies reflecting the rich heritage Sparrow helped bring to international attention. One of the memorable moments came when his daughter, Karen Francisco, paid tribute by singing Frank Sinatra’s classic song, “My Way.” The Prime Minister also announced plans to honour Sparrow by naming the Grandstand at Queen’s Park Savannah after him, recognising his lasting impact on the nation. From his unforgettable music to his influence on generations of performers, Mighty Sparrow leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond Trinidad and Tobago. As the Caribbean remembers its Calypso King, his voice and songs continue to live on, ensuring that Slinger Francisco will never be forgotten.
