Description

Why don’t we eat hippo meat? In 1910, U.S. Congressman Robert Broussard seriously proposed importing hippopotamuses to Louisiana—both to control invasive water hyacinth and to create a new source of meat for Americans. If his plan had succeeded, “lake cow bacon” might be sold beside beef and pork today. The proposal was designed to address rising beef prices, food shortages, and waterways being destroyed by invasive plants. But hippo farming never became part of the American meat industry—and the reason goes far beyond politics. In this video, we explore the forgotten history of America’s hippo meat proposal and the biological realities that made it almost impossible. Hippos are extremely territorial, difficult to control, slow to mature, dangerous to contain, and unable to accept humans within their natural social hierarchy. These traits make large-scale hippo farming impractical, even though hippo meat itself is edible. The story also reveals something much bigger: why cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats became common livestock while other large animals never made it onto our plates. Geography, animal domestication, and decisions made thousands of years ago shaped the modern food system we still depend on today. Watch to discover why America nearly became a hippo-farming nation—and why the animal carrying the meat was always a bigger problem than the meat itself. Subscribe for more forgotten history, unusual food stories, and fascinating historical breakdowns.
