FIRE FROM HEAVEN: ELIJAH VS. 850 PROPHETS OF BAAL

THE FIRE ON MOUNT CARMEL: ELIJAH VS. 850 PROPHETS What happens when one prophet stands alone against 850 prophets of false gods? On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to prove whose God was truly alive. They cried out, danced, and called upon Baal from morning until afternoon, but there was no answer. Then Elijah stepped forward. He rebuilt the altar of the Lord with twelve stones, prepared the sacrifice, and did something that seemed completely impossible. He poured twelve huge jars of water over the offering and the wood. Then Elijah prayed. And fire fell from heaven. The fire consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water in the trench. The people fell facedown and cried: “The Lord—He is God! The Lord—He is God!” But the story did not end with the fire. Elijah prayed again, a tiny cloud appeared over the Mediterranean Sea, and soon heavy rain returned to the drought-stricken land of Israel.
