Description

Fans of W.C. Fields in It's A Gift (1934) and the fast-talking con-artist comedies of early Hollywood cannot miss this Golden Age farce about two swindlers whose luck finally runs out in a town too sharp for them. Two smooth-talking swindlers roll into one small town after another, selling worthless stock certificates to gullible townsfolk before the law catches up with them. Their latest stop is Chesterville — and this time, they've set their sights on a home for war veterans, unloading shares in a nonexistent oil field on men who trusted them at their word. J.D. McAllister and his partner Hamilton — played by the vaudeville comedy duo Ole Olsen and Chic Johnson — think they've found easy marks. But McAllister falls for Louise Heath (Lila Lee), the widowed owner of the local hotel, who slowly talks him into giving up the con game for good. Before he can convince his partner to walk away too, the people of Chesterville catch on to the scheme, and the two con men find themselves running out of road — and out of town. Directed by Ralph Staub for Republic Pictures, Country Gentlemen was Olsen and Johnson's vehicle before the duo became famous for their anarchic Broadway hit Hellzapoppin'; here they're still working a more conventional comic-crook formula, introducing themselves directly to the audience at the film's opening despite having already appeared in several earlier features together, including Oh, Sailor Behave! and Gold Dust Gertie. Released on November 9, 1936, and running just over an hour, Country Gentlemen is a light, fast-moving slice of Depression-era programmer comedy — con men, a small town, and a moral compass that finally kicks in a little too late for their own good.
