Description

Fans of Humphrey Bogart in High Sierra (1941) and Robert Mitchum in Out Of The Past (1947) cannot miss this fast-paced film noir where a forest ranger's own backyard becomes the hunting ground for a gangster on the run. A forest ranger risks his life pulling two horses from a burning building during a wildfire — and earns himself a promotion to head of the Dark Mountain district. But his first furlough brings a very different kind of fire: the woman he loves, Kay, has just married another man. Don Bradley (Robert Lowery) returns to his post heartbroken, unaware that Kay's new husband, wholesaler Steve Downey (Regis Toomey), is actually running a black market racket behind his respectable front. When a government agent gets too close to the truth, Steve has him killed and staged as an accident — and Kay, realizing exactly who she's married, finds herself trapped between fear for her own safety and a growing suspicion that will put her back in Don's path. Directed by William Berke for Pine-Thomas Productions, Dark Mountain is a tight, 56-minute film noir built for speed — also released under the alternate titles Thunderbolt and Thunder Mountain. The chase eventually comes to a head with a fake radio report designed to lure Steve out of hiding, a truck loaded with dynamite, and Willie's dog Luther leaping in to save the day. Alongside Lowery and Toomey, Ellen Drew stars as Kay, with Eddie Quillan as Don's loyal assistant Willie and Elisha Cook Jr. — a familiar face from countless noirs of the time — as Steve's henchman Whitey. Shot in black and white by Fred Jackman Jr., Dark Mountain is a compact, atmospheric B-picture from the height of the studio era's crime-thriller output.
