It looks hard, but it's just 4 groups of 2 gears each. How it works? This is john deere ’s Syncro-Range transmission , used on tractors like the john deere 4020 3020 and 4020 in the 1960s and early 1970s. The trick: 4 groups of gears. Pick a group, then choose one gear in it. That makes 8 forward speeds. To change groups, the vintage tractor has to stop and the driver must press the clutch. Within a group, you can shift on the move using the clutch. john deere also offered an optional Power Shift version that needed no clutch.
