Description
Every September the same phone call came into my store. A full feeder, a quiet yard, not one chickadee all week, and the woman calling was sure she'd driven her birds away. After 30 years running a wild bird store in Michigan, I heard nine reasons for that silence every fall. Two of them mean you should take your feeder down. The rest mean keep it fresh and be patient.
In this video:
1. Free wild food everywhere in September
2. The migration shuffle between summer and winter birds
3. Molting birds hiding in the shrubs, including the "bald" cardinal
4. A new predator, dog or noise bothering them
5. A Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk at your feeder
6. Sick birds and house finch eye disease
7. A changed yard or a moved feeder
8. Bad or moldy bird seed
9. A dirty feeder and fouled ground underneath
I also cover how to clean a bird feeder, when to take it down, and how to keep birds coming back to your backyard feeder this fall.
Tell me in the comments where you're watching from, the state or the province, and which bird you've been missing. Has a hawk been hunting your yard? Type HAWK, or BALD if a cardinal showed up with no head feathers.
If your birds feel a little like family, and you notice the day they don't show up, this channel is for you. Subscribe, so whenever your yard goes quiet, you'll already know where to look.
When the first real cold comes through, watch that feeder, because the ornithologist Roger Lederer said it better than I ever could. Never fear, they will be back. Probably.
