Description
The bird my customers most wanted gone was the one bird I always told them to leave alone. They'd come into my shop upset, with feathers on the snow under the pine, and ask what they could buy to stop it.
After 30 years running a wild bird store, I'm sharing the five birds people most want gone from their backyard bird feeders, which fixes work best, and which only slow a bird down. Three of the five aren't even native.
In this video:
1. European starling: bottom-access suet feeders, cages and menu changes
2. House sparrow: the halo, white millet, and nest box trouble
3. Cooper's hawk: why I never sold a fix, and how to give small birds cover
4. Common grackle: tube feeders with short perches, safflower and feeding zones
5. Rock pigeon: how to tell it from the mourning dove, and the cheapest fix in my whole store
Tell me in the comments: what's the very first bird at your feeder in the morning, before the crowd shows up?
If you're the one in the family who knows which bird is at the feeder before anybody's had their coffee, subscribe. Every week I share what thirty years behind that counter taught me, the things the seed companies never print on the bag.
And when your yard goes quiet some winter morning, look up into the pine before you blame the seed.
