Description

Butterfly (1981) is one of the most unusual and controversial forgotten movies of early-1980s Hollywood. Directed by Matt Cimber and starring Pia Zadora, Stacy Keach, and Orson Welles, this retro Hollywood drama became remembered not only for its provocative story, but also for the controversy surrounding Zadora’s sudden Golden Globe victory. Set in 1937 Nevada, Butterfly follows Kady, a young woman returning to the isolated world of her father Jess Tyler and becoming caught in a disturbing family conflict that eventually reaches the courtroom. Based on James M. Cain’s novel, the film combined period drama, mystery, scandal, and an ambitious cast—including legendary actor Orson Welles. But the story behind Butterfly became almost as fascinating as the movie itself. When Pia Zadora won the 1982 Golden Globe for New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture, questions surrounding the award, Hollywood influence, and her husband Meshulam Riklis created a controversy that followed the film for years. The backlash helped turn Butterfly into one of the more curious forgotten chapters in Hollywood history. In this cinematic documentary, we explore the making of Butterfly (1981), Pia Zadora’s rise, the film’s controversial reputation, the Golden Globe controversy, its Hollywood reception, and why this strange piece of retro cinema history continues to attract curiosity decades later. If you enjoy forgotten Hollywood movies, classic cinema, retro cinema history, cult films, Hollywood biographies, Golden Age cinema, controversial movies, and behind-the-scenes film history, this documentary takes a closer look at the people, decisions, and controversies behind Butterfly. What do you think: was Butterfly simply a forgotten Hollywood oddity, or did the controversy surrounding Pia Zadora’s Golden Globe permanently overshadow the movie itself?
