Description

The Second Wife (1998), or La seconda moglie, is a forgotten Italian period drama that premiered at the 55th Venice International Film Festival and then quietly slipped out of international memory. Directed by Ugo Chiti and starring Maria Grazia Cucinotta, it is one of the most overlooked Italian films of the 1990s. In this retro cinema history documentary, we look at the story behind this controversial Italian film. A young Sicilian woman marries an older widower in rural Tuscany and finds herself caught inside a household full of unspoken tensions, family reputation, and shifting loyalties. We examine why the film's premise unsettled audiences and why it became a lost chapter of 1990s European cinema. In this video: • The production story behind The Second Wife, from Cecchi Gori Group Tiger Cinematografica to the Tuscan filming locations • The cast and crew, including Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Lazar Ristovski, and Giorgio Noè • The film's Venice Film Festival premiere and Italian theatrical release in November 1998 • How critics and audiences responded, and why the film faded from memory • The social themes of marriage, loneliness, and reputation in a small Italian community • Why this film is worth rediscovering today as a time capsule of late-1990s Italian cinema This documentary takes a historical, analytical approach to forgotten movies, cult classics, and controversial films from the VHS era and earlier. Where public records are limited, such as the film's budget and box office, we say so plainly instead of repeating unverified claims. If you enjoy forgotten Italian films, European cinema history, and the untold stories behind classic movies, this video is for you. 💬 Question for you: Have you seen The Second Wife, or other Italian films of the 1990s that deserve a second look? Tell us in the comments. We read every one. 👍 Like this video if you love rediscovering lost cinema. 🔔 Subscribe to Retro Cinema History & Icon Biographies for new documentaries o
