Description

Around the year 985, Norse settlers established farming communities in Greenland that survived for several centuries despite isolation and a harsh climate. Over time, however, contact with Europe weakened, trade declined, and by the 1400s the settlements gradually disappeared for reasons still debated by historians, including climate change, economic isolation, and conflicts or migration. For centuries, Europe was uncertain about what had happened to these colonies. In 1721, missionary Hans Egede sailed to Greenland, expecting to find descendants of the Norse settlers who might have drifted away from Christianity. Instead, his expedition discovered only abandoned ruins, confirming that the Viking-era communities had vanished long before renewed contact. The mission marked Europe’s rediscovery of Greenland and revealed that the once-thriving Norse settlements had disappeared centuries earlier, leaving behind one of history’s enduring mysteries. ⚠️ This video is shared for educational and documentary purposes. It focuses on historical exploration, archaeology, and documented historical research. #history #shortshistory #facts #vikings #historyfacts #greenland
