What Happened to Emperor Hirohito After Japan Surrendered? When Japan surrendered in August 1945, Emperor Hirohito had been worshipped as a living god by over seventy million people. Wars had been waged in his name. Millions had died under his banner. Seventy percent of Americans wanted him executed. And yet, he was never put on trial. He was never removed from the throne. Instead, he was quietly preserved by the very nation that had just defeated him. This video tells the full story of what happened to Hirohito after the surrender — from the terrifying coup attempt to steal his surrender recording, to the iconic photograph with General MacArthur that rewired an entire nation's psychology, to the secret deal that shielded him from the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, to his bizarre reinvention as a marine biologist who was buried with a microscope and a Mickey Mouse watch. This is a story about power, justice, Cold War strategy, and the moral compromises that shaped the modern world.
