Description
Australia Built a Power Station 800 Meters Underground — But Why?
Snowy 2.0 is Australia’s massive underground battery and pumped hydro storage project, featuring one of the world’s most ambitious underground power stations.
Deep beneath the Snowy Mountains, engineers are building a massive machine hall and a complex 27-kilometer tunnel system designed to store energy and generate electricity whenever Australia needs it most.
The Snowy 2.0 underground power station sits around 800 metres underground (deep enough to fit the entire Burj Khalifa inside) and utilizes six massive reversible turbines built by Voith Hydro. The project is capable of generating 2,200 megawatts of power and storing an astounding 350 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy—enough to
power 3 million homes for a full week continuously.
However, building Snowy 2.0 has been an extreme engineering nightmare. Engineers have faced difficult geology, massive excavation work, extreme water hammer pressure, and the infamous December 2022 Florence tunnel boring machine incident. A major sinkhole in a national park trapped the 3,300-tonne machine underground, creating toxic gas risks and pushing the project budget from an original $2 Billion to nearly $12 Billion.

📌 What You'll Learn In This Video:
✔ The history of the original 1949 Snowy Mountains Scheme (16 dams, 8 power stations)
✔ How Snowy 2.0 works as a mountain-scale pumped hydro storage battery
✔ How water drops through 17km of tunnels between Tantangara and Talbingo reservoirs
✔ What happens inside the Snowy 2.0 machine hall 800m underground
✔ How six reversible turbines pump water uphill using surplus solar and wind power
✔ The engineering behind the Force Activated Coupling System and Marica Surge Shaft
✔ How engineers built custom TBMs like 'Kirsten' to climb a 25-degree incline
✔ What caused the December 2022 sinkhole disaster that trapped the Florence TBM
✔ How ultra-high pressure water jetting was used to rescue the machine in July 2024
✔ Why project costs exploded from $2 Billion to $12 Billion over time
✔ The shift from fixed-price contracts to hybrid target cost models for Australian taxpayers
✔ Whether Snowy 2.0 is an extraordinary engineering feat or a costly lesson in geology
