Description
Who took the first selfie?
Long before smartphones, social media, and even photographic film, a small group of pioneers in the 1830s and 1840s began turning their cameras on themselves.
In this video, we explore ten of the earliest surviving photographic self-portraits from the dawn of photography. These remarkable images include early daguerreotypes, calotypes, salted paper prints, and direct positive photographs created at a time when exposure could take several minutes and every image required careful preparation.
You will see the restored faces of Hippolyte Bayard, Robert Cornelius, Henry Fitz Jr., Henry E. Insley, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, Henry Craigie Brewster, Camille Dolard, David Octavius Hill, Dr. John Adamson, and Jean-Gabriel Eynard.
Many of the original photographs have survived for more than 180 years. Some are scratched, faded, stained, or severely deteriorated. Each image in this video has been carefully restored and colorized while preserving the original facial features, expression, hairstyle, clothing, and historical character as faithfully as possible.
The goal is not to reinvent these people, but to help us see the real faces captured during the very first years of photography.
