Description

A rare look at Mary Somerville (1780–1872), the pioneering Scottish mathematician, astronomer, and science writer who became one of the most celebrated women of science in the 19th century. Largely self-educated, Somerville became internationally respected for explaining complex ideas in mathematics, astronomy, and the physical sciences to a wider audience. This remarkable albumen photograph dates from 1850–1859 and was made by an unknown photographer. The historic portrait has been carefully restored and brought to life while preserving Somerville’s authentic historical appearance. The original photograph is preserved by the National Galleries of Scotland.
