Description

When the Croatian Army launched an assault into the Medak Pocket, the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry was ordered to move between the warring sides to enforce a ceasefire and protect innocent civilians. Instead of peace, they were met with a fierce nineteen-hour battle in the dark against heavy machine guns, cannons, rocket-propelled grenades, and snipers. When the sun came up, they could see smoke rising from burning villages. Blocked by landmines and an enemy main battle tank on the hill above them, their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jim Calvin, made a brilliant and risky decision. He called a live press conference right in front of the minefield, forcing the international media to shine a light on what was happening behind the lines and stopping the killing in its tracks. For nearly ten years, this battle was kept quiet back home, leaving many soldiers to carry the invisible wounds of war on their own. This is the honest, powerful story of the Battle of Medak Pocket and the brave Canadians who stood up for human life when the world looked away. ---------- Battle of Medak Pocket 1993, 2 PPCLI Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, Lieutenant Colonel Jim Calvin, Canadian peacekeeping Croatia, UNPROFOR Sector South, Medak Pocket firefight, Canadian Army reservists in combat, Operation Harmony Balkans, Wayne Eyre Medak Pocket, Canadian military history documentaries ---------- Support Us! 🇨🇦 If you value these honest stories of Canadian courage and sacrifice, please consider: - Liking the video to help share this history with others - Leaving your thoughts in the comments - Subscribing and turning on notifications 🔔 ---------- Sources: - Canadian War Museum - Operations in the Balkans: https://www.warmuseum.ca/ - Veterans Affairs Canada - Canadians in the Former Yugoslavia: https://www.veterans.gc.ca/ - Carol Off - The Ghosts of Medak Pocket: The Story of Canada Secret War - Lee Windsor, David Charters, and Brent Wilson - The Medak Pocket: 2 PPCLI in Croatia - Department of National Defence - Board of Inquiry on the Balkans Deployments: https://www.canada.ca/ ----------- Timestamps 00:00 - The Battle Nobody Expected 02:30 - The Reservists of 2 PPCLI 05:15 - Sector South and the Medak Pocket 08:45 - The Nineteen-Hour Night Battle 12:10 - Morning Smoke and the Broken Ceasefire 15:20 - Standoff at the Minefield 18:40 - Entering the Pocket and Finding the Truth 22:15 - Decades of Silence and the Cost of Peace ----------- Disclaimer: All historical accounts, records, and narrative elements are presented strictly for educational and historical preservation purposes. #MedakPocket #CanadiansAtWar #PPCLI #CanadianPeacekeepers #MilitaryHistory #UNPROFOR #BalkansWar #CanadianArmy #TrueNorth #ForgottenHeroes
