Description
When Canada sent three warships to the Persian Gulf in August 1990, the commanders of the coalition anticipated that they would have to oversee the small number of Canadian ships. Since the Korean War the Canadian Navy had not taken part in any combat operations and its entire surface fleet consisted of only 23 combat vessels as compared to the 500 or more possessed by the United States Navy.
Rather, the boarding teams from HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Terra Nova, and HMCS Protecteur gave a masterclass in maritime interdiction operations (MIO): working in blazing 50°C heat, navigating minefields, and carrying out high-risk hostile boardings, the Canadian sailors set a standard of discipline, tactical restraint, and precision which astonished coalition leadership.
In November 1990 the commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command made an unusual request by asking Canadian personnel to provide formal training for the boarding teams of the American, British, French and Australian forces.
The following is the real account of Operation FRICTION—proof that 850 Canadian sailors have shown military excellence cannot be determined by the size of a fleet but by the skill and professionalism on display among those who serve.
