Description

Miranda. The smallest of the five major moons of Uranus, only about 470 kilometers across, and for most of the time since its discovery in 1948 it was assumed to be a small, frozen, unremarkable ball of ice. That assumption held until 1986, when the Voyager 2 spacecraft passed through the Uranus system and photographed it up close for the only time in history. What the images returned did not match anything expected from a body that size. Miranda has some of the most extreme terrain in the entire solar system, packed onto a surface barely wider than the length of Spain.
