Description
At dawn on June 19, 1944, Japan launched its carriers against the American fleet in the Philippine Sea — expecting to strike first and strike hard. Instead, radar saw them coming, Hellcats rose to meet them, and the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot began.
This was not simply one fighter beating another. The F6F Hellcat was part of a larger machine — radar stations, combat information centers, fighter direction officers, trained crews, and a steady supply of new aircraft and pilots. Japan had courage, experience, and a plan built around striking first. America had built a system designed to find the enemy, organize a response, and keep fighting after the first blow.
